Hash Generator
Compute SHA-1, SHA-256, SHA-384 and SHA-512 digests of text or a file, as hex or Base64. Runs in your browser.
How it works
A hash function turns any input into a fixed-length fingerprint. The same input always gives the same digest, and a small change to the input gives a completely different one. The four algorithms here produce 160, 256, 384 and 512 bits. SHA-1 is kept for checking older checksums, but it is no longer secure against deliberate collisions, so do not use it for new security work.
Text is encoded as UTF-8 before hashing, so the same characters always give the same bytes on every device. A file is hashed byte for byte. The digest is computed by the browser's Web Crypto, and shown as hex (two characters per byte) or Base64 (about 33 percent longer, with = padding). To check the tool, hash the text abc: the SHA-256 digest is ba7816bf8f01cfea414140de5dae2223b00361a396177a9cb410ff61f20015ad.
This page needs Web Crypto (crypto.subtle). If your browser does not provide it, the page says so and does not hash anything.
